CHAPTER 11

CON

Un-Corked was an upscale restaurant packed with people, and Con had chosen a table just inside one of the large front windows. Hopefully, that would keep Neve from giving out to him too loudly when he delivered the bad news.

He spotted the two men who had been tailing him all morning. They’d been in the back room of The Close the night before. Now they sat across the square at an outdoor café.

Con had called Davies earlier and told him that he needed privacy during his lunch with Neve. He had argued that he couldn’t think on his feet properly if he knew people were listening in on their conversation, in which case Neve would sense something was wrong and refuse to leave. Davies had agreed to let him turn off his phone so they couldn’t hear what was being said but told him to keep the phone with him so they could still track him. That seemed unnecessary since they clearly had eyes on him, but apparently Brickhaven wasn’t taking any chances.

He had taken advantage of Davies’s permission to turn off his phone and done so just as he reached the Grand Parade. He arrived at the restaurant early, then pretended he had forgotten something and walked over to the English Market. Once inside, he headed to Foley’s Flints, the cigarette stand run by Banshee’s techie friend. John Foley introduced himself and sold Con a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, which he described as “the special one you requested.” John said it was a voice-activated recorder, and it was turned on by lighting it up. As he left, Con checked on the goons tailing him. Thankfully, they looked as bored as ever and didn’t appear to suspect that anything unusual had occurred.

Once Con was seated in the restaurant, he saw Neve before she saw him. A taxi dropped her off at the curb. Con glanced at the goons again, but they didn’t see her; their attention was on him. His gaze returned to Neve, drinking in the sight of her as she looked around, spotted the sign for Un-Corked, and began to walk toward him.

He discovered that watching Neve when she didn’t know she was being watched was a singular pleasure. Usually, there was a small element of self-consciousness about her, but not now, not in this moment. She was fully herself, fully Neve. Seeing her like that made Con feel like he was discovering yet another hidden layer of the woman he loved. He knew he could spend his whole life learning her without ever growing tired of it.

But first, he had to get through this lunch.

He stood as she approached the restaurant door, waving her over as she walked in. The way her face brightened when she spotted him made his heart swell—and then break, knowing he was about to ruin her day. She accepted the offer of his outstretched arm, though, and they shared a quick embrace.

Stepping away, she looked him over like she was expecting to see new gunshot wounds.
